essay, Volume 10 is interested in capturing a transition: the way college writing exists and grounds itself in the “in-between”, and in the way authors, who inhabit this “in-between”, nonetheless find security and stability. Maybe your mind changed, dramatically, over the course of writing this piece — maybe your argument took a total 180 after office hours, or maybe, you gradually realized over the course of the writing process that you understood a concept you never thought you were going to understand.
We consider works from all sorts of disciplines and genres: formal essays, Sakai posts, lab reports, class notes, creative pieces, multimedia work such as photography, artwork, photography powerpoints, drawings, your favorite paper, your least favorite paper: there are no limits!
We’d also like you to reflect, in around 250 words, on the process of writing your piece and how it relates to our theme for this year’s issue: to transition. More information on the theme can be found below:
Maybe you wrote your piece in the middle of incredible homesickness, or in the middle of realizing that college was, in fact, your home. Maybe you wrote it in the odd 15 minute chunk of time between your classes, or during a feverish burst of energy in the early hours as dawn shifted into morning.
Or perhaps you wrote this piece in a liminal space itself: in a dorm hallway while your roommate was sleeping, at the Coop in the midst of a bustling after-dinner rush, in the bright fluorescent lights of the fourth floor of Honnold Mudd just minutes before the voiceover blared to tell you to exit the library. No matter how transition interacts with your piece, we want to hear about it. Reflections will be published in the journal alongside your submission.
Please upload your piece and reflection as a single document. The deadline is 11:59 PM PST on December 13th. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Sasha Leonard (sllb2021@mymail.pomona.edu) or Maggie Zhang (mlzo2022@mymail.pomona.edu).
